Chapter 13

Brela

“You two seem to be getting along swimmingly,” Brela whispered, gesturing to Ryker as they donned their clothes for the trip back to the manor.

“Yes. We've agreed to our engagement.”

Brela couldn’t keep the shock from her expression. “Oh?”

Vassa sucked in her lip. “Outwardly, we'll pretend to go along with the engagement until Ryker can change his mother's mind.”

Ah. “Smart.”

“We talked about it at the garden dinner and went from there.”

But she'd not told Brela.

Vassa twisted the wet ends of her hair around her fingers. “I wanted to tell you, but it just didn't come up. To make it believable, everyone needs to… Well, believe it.”

“Right. No, it's brilliant. Really.” Brela had no idea why she was annoyed. It was a brilliant plan. It would get Aria off their backs and bide time on that front.

Her eyes grazed over Ryker, whose back was to them, the muscles playing over flesh as he put his boots on.

“I’m glad you guys are getting along.”

And she meant it; she did. She just hadn’t expected them to be so friendly.

Vassa glanced at Ryker, too. “We’ve sort of become friends, making things much easier.”

“I agree.”

Vassa’s attention returned to Brela. “You don't think we're horrible for deceiving everyone?”

“Of course not.”

Vassa sighed. “I saw your face, Brela.”

“It wasn't that.”

Vassa lifted a brow, and Brela worried her lip with her teeth. Vassa’s gaze snagged Ryker again, who was speaking with Middon, both fully clothed. Her gaze then whipped back to Brela with raised brows. “Oh! You… You aren't…”

Goddess of the moon. Brela vigorously shook her head. “No, no. I was…worried about Middon. He and I have become friends, too.”

Vassa grinned and glanced at Middon, who met her gaze and held. “No need to worry. I'll talk to him.”

“Good.” But Brela didn't feel any better. She was not interested in Ryker. At all. She didn't care what they did.
